Labradoodle Facts

  • Labradoodles are 50% Labrador Retriever and 50% Poodle (F1) or 75% Labrador Retriever and 25% Poodle (F1b).
  • Labradoodles come in many colors. The colors are usually black, apricot, red, cream chocolate, or merle.
  • Labradoodles have more endurance.
  • Labradoodles have hybrid vigor that comes from crossing two diverse gene pools (Labrador Retriever + Poodle). Often the Labradoodle puppy (Labrador Retriever/Poodle) has considerably fewer health issues than either parent breed would have. As humans, we never marry close relatives for similar reasons.
  • Labradoodle.net is a partnership of families networked with Crockett Doodles who believe in family-raised, top-quality pups.

Hybrid vigor greatly helps the overall health and quality of life of a Labradoodle compared to that of a Labrador Retriever or Poodle and healthier dogs tend to live longer.

Hybrid Dog Breeds

The mixing of various dog breeds to form hybrids has been going on for hundreds of years. But it wasn’t until the 1990s, with the revolution of the Goldendoodle, that hybrids, also known as designer dogs, began to grow in popularity.

Poodle hybrids, or doodles, became popular because they combine the hypoallergenic qualities of a Poodle’s coat with the personality of whatever breed you choose to mix with a Poodle. However, looks and reduced allergies aren’t the only reasons that hybrids continue to gain popularity.

For years people desired purebred dogs with impressive pedigrees, but those pedigrees came at a devastating price: inbreeding. In order to keep bloodlines pure and to achieve the certain distinct look that each breed has, breeders resort to breeding dogs that are related. Inbreeding results in a loss of genetic diversity, which leads to increased health issues and higher susceptibility to sickness.

Take the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, for example. The classic Cavalier look comes with a short snout, round head, and large round eyes. The short snout and round head come with some huge drawbacks, however. Cavaliers are also known for their health issues like heart murmurs and Chiari-like malformations, which make their skulls too small for their brains and lead to many neurological problems. So, although Cavaliers are very cute, sometimes they live short and sadly painful lives simply because people want Cavaliers to look a certain way.

A hybrid takes two completely different genetic codes, that of, say, a golden retriever and a poodle, and mixes them together, increasing genetic diversity within the offspring of these two breeds. Hybrids result in stronger, healthier dogs that live longer. Better health of these hybrids is not only good for the dog itself, but also good for their owners. Healthier dogs means less vet bills and more years with your favorite companion.

Some dog owners still desire a purebred dog solely because they prefer the way a specific breed looks. But many dog parents are choosing to add hybrid fur babies to their homes because instead of searching for a distinct look, they wish for a healthier companion. After all, the healthier the dog, the longer your pooch will be around to fill your life with joy and plenty of puppy snuggles.

3 Ways to Choose Whether You Want a Labradoodle or Goldendoodle

The first difference between a Goldendoodle and a Labradoodle is their lineage. A Goldendoodle is a mix of a Golden Retriever and a Poodle and a Labradoodle is a Labrador and a Poodle. Most of the differences between the two breeds stem from the differences in the Labrador and Golden Retriever breeds.

1. Appearance of Labradoodles vs. Goldendoodles

Labradoodles look different than Goldendoodles because they are born with different colored coats and with coats that have a different consistency. A Labradoodle will typically have shorter, wirier fur that comes in a larger variety of colors such as black, chocolate, red, cream, white, and parti or tri colored coat. A Goldendoodle will have longer, curlier fur that will either be golden, apricot or red.

They both share the non-shedding, hypoallergenic coats that have become so desirable in Doodle varieties so whether you choose Labradoodle or Goldendoodle your dog will more than likely be safe for any family members with allergies.

2. Temperament of Labradoodles vs. Goldendoodles

While both Goldendoodles and Labradoodles are very energetic, personable, great family dogs there are slight differences between the two. Goldendoodles are usually more friendly and enthusiastic with a happiness that lasts longer than the energizer bunny. Labradoodles are a bit more reserved than Goldendoodles but in a loyal way. They are less apt than Goldendoodles to make new friends but they are extremely loyal to their families and are still very energetic and playful dogs.

3. Similarities between Labradoodles & Goldendoodles

Both breeds are highly intelligent and make excellent family pets. If you are searching for a pet for either a family with young children or for a sweet companion for a couple who is a little older in age, either a Goldendoodle or Labradoodle would be an excellent choice. They are also both incredibly effective guide or therapy dogs, while Labradoodles are bit more apprehensive in new environments they are still wonderful guide or therapy dogs when trained correctly. With proper training or the opportunity to grow up in a loving family Goldendoodles and Labradoodles are beautiful, loving pets with a high aptitude for learning, an infectious exuberance, and a huge heart for people.
